Next Monday marks the start of the annual “Small Business Week when government and business groups get together to muster support for the UK’s army of 4.7 million small businesses. Central to the program of events is the biggest survey of SME’s of all time. Called ‘Business Pulse,’ the survey has been busy asking tens of thousands of business owners up and down the country what the big issues are in developing – or hindering – their company’s growth. The results of the survey will be helping to theme the discussions, seminars and advice clinics being offered during the week ahead. The organizers are hoping that this will lead to a greater understanding of what’s needed to help the economy get going again.

The wholesale energy market has fluctuated widely, peaking at its highest ever level and creating real concern about uncontrollable, spiraling cost. Then prices crumbled to a third of their peak, paving the way (you would think) for welcome pre-Winter cuts in business electricity tariffs. Instead, this prompted the suppliers to risk more negative sentiment from their business energy customers by pouring cold water over the prospect of lower prices, blaming the unpredictability of prices and other costs to bear. This is surely to have fuel resentment among small business owners who are well and truly fed up of feeling the pinch.

So, accordingly, what advice should be handed out during Small Business Week…? Compare business electricity prices so that you take advantage of new customer rates by switching supplier and cut your bills in half. But don’t make the mistake that many household energy bill payers have made… that by switching once you are more likely to stay on competitive rates in future. Datamonitor has looked into business energy rates historically and concluded that suppliers make a loss on your account in your first year as a customer because of the attractive rate that enticed you there initially. They then make a healthy profit in the second year as they put up prices in the hope that you assume your loyalty will be rewarded and stay.
