Next-gen consoles ready to thrive, says Riccitiello

By Brendan Sinclair

Former CEO of Electronic Arts sees a bright future for consoles, provided Sony and Microsoft get four key things right

Despite recent disruption in the gaming industry, former Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello thinks the next-gen consoles can excel even in a world of smartphones and tablets. In a guest column on Kotaku today, Riccitiello laid out what he sees as four potential stumbling blocks that, if avoided, will guarantee next-gen success for Microsoft and Sony.

Ricitiello’s first point of emphasis was that the systems need to be aimed squarely at gamers. To reach the core audience, the new consoles shouldn’t be positioned as all-in-one multimedia boxes.

“The risk is that either or both of the new platforms emphasize these ‘value-add’ experiences too much, both in the user interface on the consoles themselves, or in the story they tell consumers when they unleash their avalanche of advertising,” Riccitiello said.

The second and third points were more about not repeating the mistakes of previous console launches. Specifically, Riccitiello said supply chains need to be improved such that anyone who wants a new console at launch can find one on shelves, and the end product needs to be priced low enough that consumers will snatch up all the systems produced.

Finally, Riccitiello said Microsoft and Sony need to tread lightly around “third-rail topics” like DRM and second-hand game sales. In his view, the solution is to make the console ecosystem more open, and less of a walled garden. If they play their cards right, Microsoft and Sony will actually find gamers will “learn to love” more connected console experiences, Riccitiello said.

“It needs to be simple, seamless and without a bunch of headaches with multiple registration, identity and pay gates,” Riccitiello said. “The walled garden will fall eventually.”

Former EA boss confident in next gen-consoles

John Riccitiello, former EA boss believes that PS4 and Xbox One will both be successful, saying, “I believe that console gaming is going to explode on the scene of consumer electronics with this next generation of consoles.”

He goes on to identify four key areas the console companies will need to get right in order to achieve this success, thanks to MCVUK.

The first of these areas being that the companies remember that it is gamers that bring them their success in the first place and not to put too much emphasis on “value add” experiences in both the user interface and the story they tell consumers.

Following on from that they will need to meet supply demand, where consumers are now used to getting what they want immediately. Then of course there is the always debated price, which in the past has been somewhat determined by supply and demand. And finally how certain new features are handles by the console companies, such as always-on connection and playability of previous generation games.

If they handle all of those things in the right way, Riccitiello believes the new consoles will thrive. “Console gaming is very different. I don’t have the fastest thumbs, so playing with any skill at all requires my focus. I am fully engaged. The room with the biggest TV is the most important entertainment room in my house. And there, console gaming rules. In the room where the entertainment stakes are the highest, console gaming wins.”

“Almost everyone says they see games on smart phones and tablets taking over the game biz. They see the multi-year decline of console software at retail, as reported by NPD, and they think the console gaming is done.

“Sony and Microsoft absolutely need to deliver new boxes that really impress us,” he added. “They need to deliver platforms that enable game experiences that are not possible on current consoles. None of us has seen the future. But based on everything I know and what I have seen, most everything is pretty much in place to put console gaming front-and-centre again. I see 2013 as the year that brings gaming pizzazz back to the living room, where it all really started.”

These Are The Things That People Remember About Xbox Consoles

The new Xbox has been revealed: it’s Xbox One. Seems like a good time to reminisce on our memories about the Xbox (be it the 360 or the original), right? Appropriately, the #xboxmemories tag was trending on Twitter earlier, right before the reveal. Here’s some of what people remember about Xbox consoles.
Some memories are heartfelt. Some are kind of WTF. And some…make it sound as if we hated Xbox consoles just as much as we loved them. You can compare to the #playstationmemories tag, if you’d like.

Samsung Unveils A Bluetooth Wireless Gaming Controller For The Galaxy S 4

Samsung is releasing a bombardment of accessories along with their Galaxy S 4, one of which is a fully functional, boda-fide wireless gaming controller.

The oval shaped controller is a great deal smaller and lighter than the Xbox and Playstation controllers you’re used to gripping. It has a plastic build, and it’s so light it feels almost hollow. It feels cheap, to be quite frank — I’m used to the heft of regular controllers, and it was a little oft putting to use at first. You’ll find the regular assortment of joysticks and buttons here: two analog sticks, inset d-pad controls, two triggers on the right and left – everything you’d expect.

The controller connects to the Galaxy S 4 via a Bluetooth connection, and sadly, it isn’t backwards compatible with the S 3 or any other Samsung phones. It’s powered by two AAA batteries and there are strangely two separate battery compartments for each battery. The coolest part of the controller, if anything, is that there’s a receptacle on the top of the phone that can be pulled out as a dock for the S 4.

Now for the bad news: the controller is only compatible with games that are purchased from Samsung’s curated app portal. For many of us Android users that have already purchased and downloaded a plethora of games from the Google Play Store, that’s a severe disappointment. It also appears as though the S 4 can only link up with one controller at a time, so multiplayer gaming is a no-go for now.

Samsung wouldn’t tell us any details about the pricing, but we expect the controller to be released sometime in May.

Commando The speed-son from “The Black Whirlwind”

Author: Lee Lane-Edgar

Even though he didn’t have a long living career as a race horse, he had inherited what it needed to establish himself as a potential speed threat to all his contemporaries; Commando, sired by Domino out of mare Emma C., derived his particular speed characteristic from his sire Domino who in turn was the great grandson of the legendary speed paradigm, Eclipse.

Foaled in 1898, at the James R. Keene farm, the Castleton Stud, Commando was born a bay colt, with a comparatively slow maturation that somehow didn’t do much to convince his connections of his capabilities unless he broke his maiden with the Zephyr Stakes in 1900. His remarkable debut soon followed with the Great Trial Stakes held not more than a week ago. The six furlong race was faster than the six furlongs from his maiden race recording it in 1:11 4/5, a complete 2 seconds faster and against a contender who later followed him through many of his other accomplishments, The Parader.

He then went on to win the Montauk Stakes, another six furlong race by a lead of eight lengths, against slower contenders Cresson and Bedeck finishing second and third respectively. The pace was slower than usual, not very much a signature style of the speed-son. He soon returned with another win in the Brighton Junior Stakes against Olympian to whom he gave away as much as 13 pounds. His winning spree in the very maiden racing season witnessed him demolishing the Junior Champion Stakes, a victory he earned easily; Olympian finished third with Bellario battling for second. His season’s last, came up in the Matron Stakes, run at six furlongs which he lost due to “pure poor ride”. Beau Gallant finished a clear first while Commando settled for second and arch rival, The Parader, for third.

Commando’s racing career didn’t last too long. His sophomore comprised of mere three races, a disappointment, especially after his Two Year Old Championship and Horse of the Year Award for 1900. Commando returned to the racetracks against The Parader in the Belmont Stakes, being run at 11 furlongs. He undoubtedly won the race with a half a length lead on his arch rival (The Parader, who finished second) and All Green, finishing third. The Carlton Stakes that followed right after the Belmont had only two horses enter. Commando was challenged by Blues, the sole thoroughbred that was knocked down with a four lengths lead in the 8 furlongs race.

It’s surprising how Commando, who ran Lawrence Realization Handicap, the next, would be running his last race following such an impressive winning streak. During the race, Commando who stalked the pace and overtook for lead after a mile suddenly broke down and never could race again. Commando never went back to his original form which called for an early retirement to stud.

Owing to his remarkable in the money finishes out of nine starts, winning seven, Commando was recognized with the Horse of the Year award along with U.S. Champion Three Year Old. Commando excelled as a sire making him the Leading U.S. sire in 1907, two years after his demise. Commando, who lived for not more than seven years, sired many stakes winners, a progeny that included great race horses Colin and Peter Pan.

2012 Count Fleet Stakes Kicks Off the Triple Crown Trail at Aqueduct

Author: Lee Lane-Edgar

The Count Fleet Stakes is traditionally the first stakes race for 3-year-olds in New York. The 2012 Count Fleet Stakes will be held Jan. 7 and features the 3-year-old debut of the highly-regarded Alpha for Godolphin Racing.

A field of seven is slated for this year’s running of the Count Fleet Stakes, which is contested over one mile and 70 yards on the Aqueduct inner dirt track.

Alpha, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, will be making his first start since a disappointing 11th-place fnish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Prior to that, Alpha was a dominant Maiden winner at Saratoga before being a solid second to Union Rags, who is one of the Eclipse Award finalists for champion 2-year-old of 2011, in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes. Alpha will be racing with the anti-bleeding medication Lasix, which sometimes can improve a horse’s performance, for the first time in the Count Fleet. He has been installed as the heavy 4-to-5 favorite on the morning line.

The Count Fleet Stakes and the remainder of Aqueduct’s 3-year-old Stakes program figures to gain in notoriety this year because of an increase in purses that are due largely to the success of the recently-opened World Resorts Casino at Aqueduct. The Count Fleet is followed in the New York 3-year-old series by the Gotham Stakes and concludes with the Grade 1 Wood Memorial Stakes.

First run in 1975, the Count Fleet Stakes is named after the winner of the 1943 Triple Crown. Count Fleet would win 16 of 21 starts during his distinguished racing career and would go on to become a top stallion. In 1951 Count Fleet was the United States’ leading sire.

Among the notable previous winners of the Count Fleet Stakes are Smarty Jones and Prairie Bayou.

Smarty Jones, who won the 2004 Count Fleet, would go on that spring to become the first undefeated winner of the Kentucky Derby since Seattle Slew in 1977. Two weeks later would add the Preakness Stakes, but in his bid for racing immortality in the Belmont Stakes, Smarty Jones would be overtaken by Birdrun in deep stretch to finish second.

Prairie Bayou would win the 1993 Count Fleet Stakes and add wins in three other Kentucky Derby prep races. Made the favorite in the Kentucky Derby, Prairie Bayou encountered trouble and could only be second to Sea Hero. Two weeks later he would prove his greatness with a win in the Preakness.

Achilles of Troy holds the record for the fastest running of the Count Fleet. He stopped the teletimer in a swift 1:39.61 in the 2006 edition of the Count Fleet.

Jockeys Jorge Velasquez and Richard Migliore lead in all-time wins among riders with three apiece.

Interestingly, the only trainer to win multiple Count Fleet’s was Johnny Campo in 1977 and 1991.

The Count Fleet Stakes is one of hundreds of stake races that you can create under the exact same racing conditions of the actual race but in a virtual simulated environment.
